HOW CAN HEALTHY COOKING LOOK LIKE IN THE FUTURE?
2016 | 4 months | University of Wuppertal | Team-Project
Project is an interactive kitchen assistance that projects its interface on the users working surface during the cooking and serving process.
This project is the result of a cooporation with Bosch and the University of Wuppertal. Bosch asked the students to research and develop realistic and innovative concepts facing health issues of the future society.
My team and me, we collectively developed the concept. Within the further proess I was responsible for the concept ideation, the hardware design, modelmaking and video editing.
He and his wife Martha have a 6 year old daughter and a 2 year old son.
Jakob wishes to be a hobby chef, with a wide range of healthy recipes on demand for his family everyday life. Also he loves to invite people and would like to impress with great cooking skills.
THIS IS JAKOB
Jakob is a curious, conscious and caring 39 year old family father.
In reality he seeks for new complex recipes that, in the end, overstrain his cooking skills and his kitchen. His wife lovingly calls it creative cooking...until she sees the kitchen.
TRYING TO USE LEFTOVERS
The fridge is well-filled but Jakob doesn't know what to do with the eggplant, the potatos and remaining cream from yesterday. In the end he puts pizza in the oven.
Jakob found a great recipe on pinterest. To write down his shopping list he tries to calculate the right proportions. But his son won't eat a whole proportion and Jakob is super hungry - he could eat a whole horse....How is he supposed to calculate the correct quantities now?
WHEN JACOB INVITES FRIENDS
21st century is challenging for inviting friends for dinner. Frank and Anna are trying to whatch carbs, Jürgen decided to eat vegan for envrionmental reasons. Katjas doctor said she might have a gluten allergy, or was it wheat? Well and Martina has this lactose-thing....
A very present health and diet trend is smart cooking. Competitors came up with many different ideas of cooking assistants to improve the users diet and to simplify the cooking process. The concept should enable a better diet, create inspiration and improve the users cooking skills. Thereby the interface should adjusted to the users state of cooking knowledge, his allergies and preferences.
The concept consists of a projector for the interface. It is mounted on a rail in order to be moved above the working surface. The smart cuttingboard makes measurements during the cooking- and servingprocess and scans food to give detailed information about the ingredients. The infrared camera above the stove watches the cooking process in order to assist the user.
Bosch creates products that integrates into the users kitchen, with simple geometric shapes and conservative materials. The design of the projector and the chopping board should include a material mixture of black, stainless steel and a wooden chopping board.

The projected interface is moveable with simple geasture control and can be projected on the wall or the working surface. The wooden chopping board is detachable, for an easy cleaning. The stove camera is mounted on the exhaust hood with a magnet.
POTENTIAL & OUTLOOK
We were unable to complete the concept in detail in the relatively short processing period of one semester. Especially in the area of the interface, many things are not mature and in need of improvement. Above all, the product can be conceived much further by, for instance, networking with other smart home products or smartphones/apps. We believe the product represents a very interesting approach to how smart kitchens can look in the future.
